Today, my photoshop CS3, for some reason, began defaulting to having View -%26gt; Extras checked, or on. I've tried everything. Yes, cmd-H turns it off, but everytime I select the marquee tool, it turns it right back on. I've trashed .com.adobe.Photoshop.plist. I've restarted PS. I've rebooted the computer. I searched other forums and read about people turning slices on and off and that making it stop. Nothing's worked. I held down Option+Command+Shift to restore default settings. Nothing. Extras keeps ''checking'' itself. I went step by step to see when it turns on. When I create a new document, Extras is checked. I cmmd-H to turn it off. It's fine. I create a new layer. Still off. But then the moment I use the marquee tool to create a shape, it automatically is checked. WTF?! I don't know what else I can do. Has anyone had this happen and how do I turn it off? It is incredibly annoying, and makes not one bit of sense. Any suggestions? Thanks!
extras refuses to stay turned...Have you tried saving a file with it unchecked?
That normally makes it stick.
extras refuses to stay turned...Just tried that. Didn't work unfortunately. Created a new document. Unchecked View -%26gt; Extras. Saved. Opened up the saved file and wouldn't know it...Extras was checked again. I'm about as confused as can be.
With no document open choose View %26gt; Show %26gt; Show Extras Options. Uncheck everything you don't want.
What exact extras are suddenly appearing when you select the marquee tool?
Odd problem you have here. The only thing I can think of that might be causing it - any widgets, or OS level shortcuts interferring with command H?
Unfortunately I'm at work right now and can't try this, but will when I get home. The extras that show up are the resizing anchor points at the corners and mid-way on the length of the sides...the resizing anchor points. It's just weird that, View -%26gt; Extras is unchecked...and then the moment I select the marquee tool and create a box, it's checked again. Makes no sense. I just won't stay turned off.
As for the widgets or OS level shortcuts, I don't think so. Nothing changed at least, so not sure. I don't use widgets, and I haven't touched any OS level shortcuts...this has really just come out of the blue. Very strange.

That may be. The problem is that, they show up when I use the marquee tool, and before last night, they hadn't since I installed the program, nearly a year ago. When I uncheck the Extras, they go away. But when I notice they're back, the Extras has a check beside it, so they're definitely related in some way.
Ok if you've reset your preferences, then its a confusing issue that you have. Just a stab in the dark - and the only other thing I can come up with, is it graphics card related? Have you tried playing with the Open GL Preferences? The only other suggestions are the usual Mac maintenance routines. Permissions, cache, maintenance scripts that kind of thing.
Actually, let me back up a bit. I might be wrong about it being related to Extras. Let me explain.
So, I tried to recreate it here at work on PS (CS3), as a test to compare vs my home PS. When I have the marquee tool here at work, and either leave it on that or the move tool, those points DO NOT show up...and that's WITH a check box by Extras. So, I think I may have been wrong. But I'm still confused as to why those are suddenly showing up. Does this help any? Can those be turned on and off NOT by checking/unchecking extras?
Hope I didn't screw this all up. At then end of the day, it changed for no reason...but I may have been wrong about it being related to Extras. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Thanks. I'll get home and check it out more thoroughly. I'm noticing that the machine here at work does the same. That the check is there, but it doesn't seem to affect anything...I mean, it literally has no effect. So, very perplexed by that as well, but, it doesn't seem to matter. I went in and deselected all extras options, and the check mark still popped up. But again, seems to have no effect.
Wow. If I get home and find out that this was all due to the ''Show Transform Controls'' option being checked, i'm going to go crawl in a hole.
Oh, and yes, both machines are macs.
